Moving can seem like a daunting task, but with a little planning, you can make it efficient and stress-free. Below are some of our most trusted moving tips, gathered from years of experience helping our clients with their moves. We hope these steps will help you stay organized and make your move a smooth one.
4-6 Weeks Before Your Move:
Take Inventory: Decide what to move and what not to move. Aaron’s Reliable Movers can dispose of unwanted items or deliver them to charities.
Plan Your Trip: Make travel arrangements like hotel reservations and route planning.
Host a Moving Sale: Sell off items you won’t be moving. Donate unsold items to charitable organizations and remember to get a receipt for tax records.
Arrange for Packing: Our team highly recommends letting Aaron’s Reliable Movers handle your packing. If you prefer to do it yourself, we provide all necessary packing materials.
Discontinue or Transfer Services: Start the process of transferring or discontinuing services like Newspaper Delivery, Water Softener, Electricity, Water, Gas, Garbage Collection, and Landscaping/Pool Service.
Notify Change of Address: Notify change of address to the Post Office, credit card companies, magazines, friends, relatives, and mail-order accounts.
2-3 Weeks Before Your Move:
Handle Prescriptions: Fill and transfer prescriptions for your family and pets. Plan to travel with them.
Arrange for Shipment of Plants and Pets: Make necessary arrangements.
Dispose of Flammables: Safely dispose of or give away all flammables like paint and paint removers.
1 Week Before Your Move:
Defrost and Clean Appliances: Defrost the refrigerator and freezer, allowing them to air-dry to prevent mildew. Arrange for disposal of frozen foods. Clean the oven.
Handle Bank Accounts: Transfer your checking and savings accounts.
Prepare Equipment: Drain fuel and oil from lawn mowers and other power equipment. Drain garden hoses.
Pack Car Essentials: Pack items to be carried in the car. Label them “Do Not Move”.
Secure Valuables: Gather valuables from safe deposit boxes, drawers, jewelry cases, and personal records. Pack them safely to take with you.
Clean Items: Send clothing, draperies, curtains, and rugs out for cleaning. Leave them in their wrapping.
Pack a Survival Box: Pack a box with essentials for move-in day such as tools, paper products, all-purpose household cleaners, etc. Label it “Load Last” so it’s the first off the truck.
Pack Suitcases: Pack suitcases for the trip. Remove all bed linens.
Supervise the Move: Be available to check items on the inventory sheet. Conduct a final walkthrough with the crew foreman. Ensure windows are closed, closets are empty, lights are turned off, and doors are locked.
Be Present: Be available to check off items on the inventory as they are unloaded from the truck.
Plan Furniture Arrangement: We suggest having a pre-planned furniture layout posted close to the entrance of your new home.
Moving doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With a little planning and the help of Aaron’s Reliable Movers, you’ll be settled into your new home in no time!
